This list supplements the list of oldest people by country. Comprehensive birth registration is largely a 20th-century phenomenon, so records establishing human longevity are necessarily fragmentary. The earliest comprehensive recordkeeping systems arose in Europe which makes the continent the only place that the lifespans of people born in the 19th century can be documented and verified to the standards of modern scientific research. This is not necessarily simply due to better chances of survival.
